Windsurfing Junior

What is the RYA Junior Windsurfing Scheme?
The RYA Junior Windsurfing Scheme is a fantastic way for children and young people to get into windsurfing, starting from the very basics and progressing to more advanced techniques. The courses are designed to introduce kids to the sport in a friendly, supportive environment, helping them gain confidence on the water while learning key windsurfing skills.
The journey begins with Stage 1, where young windsurfers learn the basics of balance, steering, and controlling the sail. They'll focus on getting comfortable on the board, learning how to get going and stop, as well as how to steer and turn in light winds. The emphasis is on having fun, building confidence, and understanding the basics of windsurfing, all while learning key safety skills.
Once Stage 1 is completed, young windsurfers progress to Stage 2, where they start refining their techniques. At this level, kids will learn how to control the board more effectively in light to moderate winds, tack smoothly, and sail more efficiently upwind. Theyll also be introduced to the idea of using a harness and will start to feel more independent on the water. The course focuses on improving boat handling, wind awareness, and control of the sail, with a continued emphasis on safety.
For those who are ready to progress even further, Stage 3 introduces more advanced windsurfing skills. At this stage, young sailors refine their ability to tack and gybe, work on controlling the board in stronger winds, and begin learning about planing, where the board lifts off the water and starts skimming. They'll also learn how to perform basic water starts and improve their speed and maneuvering in different conditions. The focus is on developing a more fluid and dynamic style of windsurfing.
By the time they reach Stage 4, young windsurfers will be comfortable in a variety of conditions, including higher winds and more challenging water. They will be ready to handle performance boards, improve their techniques further, and work on their ability to control the board at high speeds and in more difficult conditions. Stage 4 also introduces the possibility of learning advanced skills like racing and freestyle windsurfing.
Throughout each stage, the RYA Junior Windsurfing Scheme ensures that young sailors build a strong foundation in windsurfing while having fun, learning new skills, and developing a love for the sport. It's a great pathway to follow for any child looking to get into windsurfing or progress to a higher level.
