Sailing Secretary, Simon Dolman, reports on the final two races of the Early Spring Series.
The final day of the 12-race series delivered an exciting conclusion, with two races packed full of tight competition, strategic sailing and a fantastic turnout on the water.
Race 11 kicked off with 17 boats on the start line, all keen to secure those critical last points. At the top of the table, things couldnt have been closer—Jeremy and Gwyn were locked in a battle for the top podium spot and every position counted. The return of Conrad Brown in his Laser after a six-race absence added another layer of pressure and he certainly made his presence known.
Conditions were lively, with winds offering occasions for the Miracles to fly their spinnakers. The battle up front was close, but Jeremy, sailing his Lightning, managed to edge ahead, crossing the line just 17 seconds ahead of Gwyns Laser. Conrad claimed a strong third, making an immediate impact on his return.
Race 12 saw a softening and more variable breeze, forcing sailors to think hard and sail smart. Wind shifts led to diverse tactics up the beats, with some gaining and others caught out. It was Mark Nield who read the shifts best, claiming first in his Laser, just ahead of Conrad in second. Joe Sargent, drawing on his experience, sailed his Laser Radial into a well-earned third place.
And with that, the curtain falls on whats been a truly fantastic series. Its been brilliant to see such strong turnouts, competitive yet friendly racing, and a great mix of seasoned sailors and those joining in for fun or experience.
So the final results were added to the Early Spring Series totals, and, in reverse order:
3rd place - with 18.2 points, Matthew Bennett (Solo)
2nd place - with 16 points, Jeremy Cooper (Lightning)
1st place and Early Spring Series winner - with 13 points, Gwyn Jones (Laser)
A quick note for anyone thinking about getting on the water—race days are a perfect opportunity to sail, even if you're not racing competitively. With safety support out and a welcoming atmosphere, its a great way to build confidence and enjoy the sport.
We're looking forward to seeing you all soon for the Twilight Wednesday Night Series and the Spring Series, which kicks off next Sunday with two morning races back-to-back and a third race after lunch.
See you on the water!
