Early Spring Series races 7 and 8. Sailing Secretary, Simon Dolman, had a wild day on the water. Heres his racing report. See some of the action https://youtu.be/1--A8XaZCxs?si=_Y_cRAypMk_fMs3Q, videos Sara B, Ian D, Andy D, John W.
Race 7:
The day kicked off with very strong winds, keeping many would-be sailors nervously monitoring the conditions before launching. With gusts hitting 30 mph, several boats opted not to race. Nevertheless, nine brave crews took to the water, though the challenging conditions saw three retire after taking a dip!.
Matt delivered an impressive performance, expertly handling his Solo in only his fourth race since switching from the Laser. His growing confidence and skill paid off as he secured a well-earned victory. Mr. Commodore Jeremy, ever-reliable, sailed a solid race to claim second place. Meanwhile, the established duo in their Miracle showed steady composure, finishing in third and rounding off the podium with a well-deserved result.
Race 8:
As the wind continued to howl, several sailors wisely decided to call it a day, leaving just three boats on the start line. Jeremy quickly established an early lead, sailing his Lightning with flawless precision. Dave and Shan, determined to stay in the mix, pushed hard in a bid to close the gap and challenge for a podium position on adjusted time. Unfortunately, Matt was forced to drop out at the start due to an elbow issue.
Despite Jeremys masterclass in Lightning sailing, Dave and Shan impressed with their dogged pursuit, finishing just 30 seconds behind him on corrected time—a remarkable effort against arguably the best Lightning sailor in the UK.
It was fantastic to see so many sailors and supporters at the club, not only taking on the tough conditions but also enjoying the camaraderie and social atmosphere. A thrilling day on the water with some top-tier performances!
So where does that leave things overall? Jeremy Cooper (Lightning) has extended his lead, followed by a tie between Gwyn Jones (Laser) and Eric Haselden. However, as Eric has returned to his home club, next week could see a new name on the overall podium…
